Thanks to the support of our donors, Stolen Chair’s 5th anniversary season was a tremendous success. The final production of the season, Kinderspiel¸ was called "awfully clever," "delectable," and "haunting" "required viewing” by an assortment of critics, and New York Press named Stolen Chair one of its “Best of Manhattan 2007.” For its achievements, the company also earned grants from the New York State Council on the Arts and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
On April 25, 2008 we’ll be kicking off our 6th season with The Accidental Patriot: The Lamentable Tragedy of the Pirate Desmond Connelly, Irish by Birth, English by Blood, and American by Inclination.This production, an original 1930s-style swashbuckling adventure with an ancient Greek twist (all set against the backdrop of the American Revolution!), is the third installment of the ambitious CineTheatre Tetralogy we began in 2005. With a cast of eighteen, live music, and even a high seas naval battle, it is the largest scale project we’ve ever conceived. It is also at least twice as expensive as our entire 5th season, in large part because we finally have the resources to begin paying our artistic collaborators a fair wage for their work.
Box office income contributes only 1/4 of our operating budget. Though support from the city and the state allows us to dream bigger, we still depend upon your support to transform our dreams into reality. Your tax-deductible donation of $200 can dress our eponymous tragic hero in full costume, and $500 buys swords for him and his crew. $1,000 (less than $3 per day if you set-up recurring donations) rents the Milagro Theater for our entire opening weekend. Even your donation of $10 buys us a full hour of rehearsal space!
